Moon Signs: An Overview

Moon Signs are the second most important signs for personal horoscopes.  They personify your emotions and therefore enable the expression of your personality.  Just like Sun signs, your Moon sign is either Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, or Pisces.  Other than the fact that personality and emotions affect interactions with people, your Moon sign does not have much to do with compatibility in relationships.  In understanding the effects of Moon signs, it is easier to understand the effects signs have on Sun signs as well.

To determine your Moon sign, either give me the date and time of your birth, or visit a website that can calculate it (sometimes they aren't accurate).  Below is a brief interpretation of each Moon sign:

Aries Moon:  
Characteristics:  high-strung, opinionated, impatient, impulsive, charming, talkative, sociable, generous, likely to become sulky, optimistic, dislikes advice, decisive, control-freak, adventurous, self-confident
Relationship Impact:  must be dominant; possessive of partner, but needs personal freedom; must have excitement, or else becomes restless; loves the chase; impulsive
Career Impact:  good in government/authority and business
Examples:  Dante Alighieri, Marlon Brando, Al Capone, Salvador Dali, Isadora Duncan, Bill Gates, Henry VIII, Jacqueline Kennedy, Robespierre, Mark Twain

Taurus Moon:
Characteristics:  ability to focus, cautious (looks before leaping), unable to change opinion once made, practical outlook, patient, responsible, artistic, romantic, dislikes noisy/big gatherings
Relationship Impact:  committed and needs the commitment of the partner; enjoys sharing possessions (home/comforts) with partner; needs devotion of partner; ready to settle-down with a soul-mate; often will settle; needs security
Career Impact:  needs a stable job that overtime will allow increased success
Examples:  Bill Clinton, Prince Charles, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Katharine Hepburn (Bryn Mawr graduate!), Mick Jagger, Carl Jung, Karl Marx, John Milton, Ronald Reagan, William Shakespeare

Gemini Moon:
Characteristics:  imaginative, creative, intellectual, judgmental, critical, charming, active, people-oriented, impressionable, analytical of personal feelings, insightful, witty, easily changeable opinions, open, irritable tendency, humorous, indecisive, independent
Relationship Impact:  selfish; seeks perfection in a partner, especially in making a connection; needs someone practical (though may not be aware of this)
Career Impact:  great in the fields of writing and teaching; business may be successful if allowed to travel and associate with many new people
Examples:  Fred Astaire, Sigmund Freud, John Keats, Rudyard Kipling, Jack London, Louis Pasteur, Queen Victoria, Barbara Walters

Cancer Moon:
Characteristics:  devoted, patient, romantic, intuitive, extremely emotional, closed off, impacted by every experience, remembers everything, easily hurt (though may express yourself aggressively), moody, self-pitying, happy when given time alone (likes to crawl into shell), often emotionally controlled by the waxing/waning of the Moon; totes sensitive
Relationship Impact:  needs deep connections and commitment; often mistrusts personal love/feelings; feels unworthy of another's love; dramatic; possessive; uses guilt tactic with loved ones; loyal
Career Impact:  art/literary expression makes for a good career; deadlines are detrimental
Examples:  Humphrey Bogart, Lord Byron, Tom Cruise, Harrison Ford, Clark Gable, Farrah Fawcett, Isaac Newton, Eleanor Roosevelt, FDR

Leo Moon:
Characteristics:  strong emotions, quick learner unless dislikes the subject (in which case, ignores the subject entirely), loves to be the center of attention, sense of humor, charming, sincere, open, sociable, leader, bossy, enthusiastic, authoritative, vain, typically generous, outgoing
Relationship Impact:  romantic; high expectations; easily disappointed with partner; needs constant attention and devotion, though may tend to be flirtatious with others
Career Impact:  good in public positions and the arts; happy in show business; works best in groups, need attention or an audience, good host
Examples:  Clint Eastwood, Queen Elizabeth II, Tom Hanks, James Joyce, Mao Tse-tung, Paul McCartney, Ralph Nader, Diane Sawyer, Oscar Wilde

Virgo Moon:
Characteristics:  analytical, questioning, skeptical of everything, enjoys discussion, truth seeker, realistic, practical, perfectionist, tends to worry, critical, lover of logic, judgmental in all situations
Relationship Impact:  seems cold; caring in practical ways; attracted to people with opposite personalities; parental; likely to be deluded about what personal relationships are really like
Career Impact:  good with money-end of business; long-term goal oriented; happy in a career where science benefits people as a whole
Examples:  Ingrid Bergman, Winston Churchill, Bill Cosby, William Faulkner, Mel Gibson, William Randolph Hearst, LBJ, JFK

Libra Moon:
Characteristics:  extremely artistic, aware, ignores the unpleasant things in life, materialistic, appearance is everything, impulsive spender, open-minded, rational, charming, good with people, innately selfish, graceful
Relationship Impact:  likely to find a successful partnership with a well-known and long-known person in life; calculating, rather than heart-driven; likely to go through many relationships; needs someone aesthetically pleasing; needs reassurance by partner that the relationship is totes chill
Career Impact:  would make a good psychologist or counselor
Examples:  Marie Antoinette, Louis Armstrong, Agatha Christie, Walt Disney, Amelia Earhart, Sylvia Plath

Scorpio Moon:
Characteristics:  tends towards the emotional extremes, motivated by emotions, forceful, good at hiding true feelings, often "in denial" of emotions or motivations, self-controlled, observational, great memory, vengeful, easily stung and happy to reciprocate the stinging, spiritual
Relationship Impact:  bad with/fear rejection; must let emotions in to find love; unintentionally attracts the opposite sex; likely to marry more than once; hates the idea of being controlled by another person; hates to be emotionally vulnerable/likes holding the power in relationships; takes a long time to trust another person and to commit; needs absolute security to open up, but it is very unlikely to feel entirely secure
Career Impact:  work that benefits humanity should help to lighten spirit and create contentedness; creativity in work field is important; most pride comes through work
Examples:  Julie Andrews, Truman Capote, Jimmy Carter, Alfred Hitchcock, Elizabeth Taylor

Sagittarius Moon:
Characteristics:  quick to complete a task, sharp-minded, insightful, never considers the possibility of failure, enthusiastic, goal-setter, adaptable, reckless, friendly, humorous and witty, sociable, open, extremely optimistic
Relationship Impact: solely an adventure; emotionally intense; likely to turn love affairs into friendships; hates being tied down; needs constant change and variety
Career Impact:  needs to travel; don't feel the need to make money; unlikely to stick to a specific career
Examples:  Neil Armstrong, Lewis Carroll, Bing Crosby, Charles Dickens, Albert Einstein, Vincent van Gogh, Bob Hope, Anthony Hopkins, Mozart, Picasso, Oprah

Capricorn Moon:
Characteristics:  constantly seeks happiness, alert, eager to learn, seeks practical use of everything; unintentionally inventive, organized, ambitious, self-sufficient; feels personally responsible for everything, obsessive, tends towards depression from failure, committed, typically successful, leader, sociable, typically lonely, humorous, dedicated, able to achieve excellence
Relationship Impact:  scared of losing the love of another; difficult revealing true feelings; authority/power can substitute the need for love; needs emotional reassurance from a potential partner; difficulty trusting others; committed once feeling secure; loyal; generous
Career Impact:  must have a career that creates an/or is an extremely useful thing; prefers independence when working/doesn't like to be bogged down by others; needs status through money
Examples:  Lucille Ball, Napoleon Bonaparte, Thomas Edison, Ernest Hemingway, Gene Kelly, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington

Aquarius Moon (my Moon sign):
Characteristics:  rational, intuitive, imaginative, accurate senses, deals with situations with an open-mind, unlikely to be extreme in emotions/moodiness, witty, friendly, sociable, people-oriented, outgoing, interested in other peoples problems/thoughts (but rarely become emotionally involved in the problems of others), not "down-to-Earth" or very practical, sometimes short-sighted, doesn't like to put much effort into something/lazy tendency, persuasive
Relationship Impact:  very romantic, but hates suffocation; doesn't like possessive partners; prefers those who don't show much emotion; attracted to those who seem uninterested; tends to marry later in life; communication is key; sometimes emotionally detached
Career Impact:  can find interest in any subject as a career; typically innovative and unusual careers are ideal
Examples:  Muhammad Ali, Woody Allen, Fidel Castro, Princess Diana, Arthur Conan Doyle, Cary Grant, John Lennon, Marilyn Monroe, Richard Nixon, H.G. Wells, William Butler Yeats

Pisces Moon:
Characteristics:  understands humans, overly romantic, interprets things through a personally created filter (hears and sees selectively), head in the clouds, extremely imaginative, hides fantasy world within, artistic, intuitive, spiritual, typically a follower, far from selfish, anxious, indecisive, avoids reality and obligations, sometimes gullible, sensitive
Relationship Impact:  desires passionate and solely romantic love; addicted to romance; always trying to please partner
Career Impact:  typically successful in artistic pursuits; happiness comes through helping others
Examples:  Hillary Clinton, Marie Curie, Audrey Hepburn, Helen Keller, MLK Jr., Michelangelo, Paul Newman, Edgar Allan Poe, Elvis Presley, Martin Scorsese, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Frank Sinatra, Leonardo da Vinci
